West Hollywood completely matches its image: it’s a showy area with fashion boutiques and trendy night clubs. The area’s popularity places great demands on the available land, which according to architect O’Herlihy, makes it increasingly unlikely that existing views and zoning will be preserved in the future. In order to be able to maintain some control over the quality of the outdoor areas of the block of eight houses he built in the neighbourhood, he had to, paradoxically, bring them inside. Double-height spaces with voids and galleries serve as outside rooms that bring lots of daylight inside.
The real quality of the houses becomes apparent, however, once you see the interior. Rather than simply stacking the mezzanines over one end of a narrow double-height space?, O’Herlihy says, ‘we pushed each mezzanine into adjacent space within the neighbouring unit, extending and lengthening its depth. By borrowing this space, the mezzanine consequently becomes a unique room which hangs off the demising walls.’ The intervention recalls a double villa in the Dutch city of Utrecht, from a design completed by Bjarne Mastenbroek, who at the time in 1998 was still working for the Architectengroep, and Winy Maas of MVRDV. The two neighbouring houses in Utrecht are also intricately entwined in order to increase the spaciousness of both. However, while the building in Utrecht was a private commission to realize a villa for two families, in West Hollywood six houses and two apartments are involved. Lorcan O’Herlihy has democratized the spaciousness of the villa within the economic restrictions of speculative housing, as if it was a prêt-à-porter collection based on the high fashion of another designer.

Willoughby 7917 led to a series of studies investigating how we could re-invigorate the loft typology and create new opportunities for living within the extremely tight economic and spatial parameters associated with speculative housing.
The site of the project is in an area zoned for medium density growth. Within this context, it becomes increasingly difficult to ensure that existing views, adjacencies and open spaces will be preserved into the future. In order to exert some measure of control and continued usability, exterior open spaces were brought inside the individual units. These open spaces, conceived of as outdoor rooms, funnel large amounts of day light to the interior and can be used as extensions of adjacent living spaces, private gardens or outdoor patios.

As a result, their position and different levels of privacy become multifaceted and can be used to house a variety of programs into which one can escape into; working, sleeping, recreation, entertainment.
The Willoughby, a multi–family development designed by Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects and developed by Whitecap Development Company, receives the Honor Award, the highest honor for architecture in the category for in–progress residential developments in Los Angeles as issued by the Westside Urban Forum.
